MANNY MALHOTRA JOINS CANUCKS AS DEVELOPMENT COACH

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President, Hockey Operations Trevor Linden announced today that the club has named Manny Malhotra to the position of Development Coach.

“We’re pleased to have Manny re-join the organization and work with our coaching staff to help develop and mentor the players,” said Trevor Linden. “Manny has a wealth of experience from nearly two decades of playing in the National Hockey League. His character, work ethic, skill and perseverance are qualities we value and know will benefit our team.”

Malhotra joins the Canucks coaching staff on a part time basis for practices at home, and will work with players to develop specialized skills, including face-offs, and systems. He will also travel on occasion to work with Canucks prospects. Malhotra brings 18 years of NHL experience, playing for the New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Montreal Canadiens and amassed 295 points (116-179-295) and 451 penalty minutes in 991 games.

The Canucks have also welcomed three new members to the Human Performance department with Bryan Marshall as Strength and Development Coach, Graeme Poole as Rehab Therapist and Dr. Jim Bovard as the team’s primary care physician. Ryan Johnson was promoted to Director of Player Development and Stan Smyl was promoted to Senior Advisor to the General Manager and Director of Collegiate Scouting. The Utica Comets have hired Toby Blosser as Head Athletic Therapist.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE

Marshall comes to Vancouver after previously serving as the organization’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Prospects. Marshall will work closely with Strength and Conditioning Coach Roger Takahashi and will bring his many years of experience to focus on strength training and conditioning, data collection and monitoring, nutrition, recovery, return-to-play and supplementation. He will continue to work with the team’s prospects. Marshall replaces Eric Renaghan who recently joined the St. Louis Blues.

Poole also joins the Human Performance Department as Rehab Therapist under the direction of Director, Rehabilitation Dr. Rick Celebrini and Head Athletic Therapist Jon Sanderson. His focus will be working with injured players while also assisting with daily maintenance. Poole most recently worked with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Dr. Bovard joins the Vancouver Canucks for his first season, serving as the team’s primary physician. Throughout his career, Dr. Bovard has worked as a Sport Medicine consultant to the Canadian Sailing Team, the Canadian Snowboard Team, Vancouver Whitecaps and he was appointed as the Venue Medical Officer for figure skating at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver. He is the Medical Lead for High Performance for the Canadian Snowboard Team and is a member of SportMed BC’s Board of Directors. He has also worked with countless high performance athletes over the past 25 years and became a Sport Medicine Consultant to the National Hockey League Players Association in 2003.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Ryan Johnson was promoted to Director, Player Development after previously serving in an Assistant Director capacity. Johnson works closely with all Canucks prospects and AHL players (Utica Comets), supporting Head Coach Travis Green and liaising with General Manager Jim Benning and Assistant General Manager John Weisbrod on player personnel matters. Johnson will continue to also work closely with Stan Smyl, Senior Advisor to the General Manager and Director of Collegiate Scouting.

UTICA COMETS

Toby Blosser joins the Utica Comets this season as Head Athletic Therapist after spending the past eight years with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.
